The Point Lookout Park Gate Project
The Civic Association has been working on a project for the past several months that will help beautify our town and increase the safety of the park. The entrance to the Point Lookout Park has been in desperate need of a makeover for many years and we finally have the opportunity to install a beautiful new wall, decorative gate and safety median.
With the help of Councilman Chris Carini and the Town of Hempstead, the initial funding has been provided to get this project off the ground. We are now looking to the Point Lookout Community to help us bring the plans to completion. Because we are a Special Park District, we are responsible for any enhancements to our park and beach. The community has worked cooperatively in the past to fundraise for the betterment of our town, including the playground, Community Garden, bocce courts and chair shack.
As you probably have seen, construction has begun on this project. The Town of Hempstead has already completed a circular safety median in front of the gate and concrete wall, which will force drivers to slow down upon entering the park. The Bohm family and Big Apple Masonry has provided a generous donation of decorative stone to place on the façade of the wall. A contractor was retained to install the stone and the blue stone caps, and that work is now complete. The next step is to have decorative galvanized steel gates manufactured and installed.
We are looking to the community to help cover the cost of the final two phases of this work. The galvanized steel fencing will cost $27,000, and with the new adjusted cost of the stone and install, the project is estimated to cost $45,000. The Civic Association in conjunction with the Point Lookout Park Project, a 501(c) (3), has launched a “Go Fund Me” style campaign. Donations can also be made directly to the Point Lookout Park Project by mailing a check made out to the Point Lookout Park Project to P.O. Box 759.
A goal of this project is to have the entire Point Lookout Community build a sense of ownership and pride in helping this effort come to fruition. Thus, we welcome donations of any amount, large or small. A measure of this campaign’s success would be the number of our neighbors who donate to this project, regardless of how much they contribute.
Once the project is complete, we will be hosting a “Christening of the Gates” by inviting all residents of Point Lookout, plus distinguished guests from the Town of Hempstead, to celebrate its completion. We will let everyone know when this will happen.
Any questions, or to find out more information, please reach out to Tom Moran or Mary Goldberg of the Civic Association at info@pointlookoutcivic.org, or Matt Brennan of the Point Lookout Park Project at info@pointlookoutparkproject.com.
Please share this with your family, friends, neighbors and renters to help us hit our goal!!!
